If it doesn&#8217;t degrade, why a 30-year life? What proves it?

The rotor is designed for 22,000 full-equivalent cycles at its 11,000 rpm operating point, with safety margins on top. Cycling uses up mechanical fatigue life, but it never reduces storage capacity, which depends only on speed. Parts such as the vacuum pump, power electronics and cooling have their own service lives and are replaced on a schedule. Long-duration testing and the utility pilots will provide the evidence for the design life.

What happens if the rotor fails at full speed?

It would be a serious event. A fully charged rotor holds a large amount of energy, and a catastrophic failure would release it very quickly inside the vacuum enclosure. The housing is not designed to contain all of that energy, which is why the Q500 is designed to be installed underground, where the surrounding soil absorbs it. The main strategy is making such a failure extremely unlikely, with independent layers. The rotor is designed for 13,000 rpm but cannot run above 11,100 rpm. Vibration and the rotor's harmonic signature are monitored continuously, so a change in balance or structure triggers a controlled shutdown. Two mechanical bearing systems back up the magnetic bearings. No one is allowed inside the enclosure while it runs. Pulsar is currently limited to low speeds while the test cell for high-speed testing is finished.

Is there a fire risk?

Accepted Answer

The energy is stored mechanically, so there is no electrolyte and no thermal-runaway chemistry to catch fire. Pulsar is being designed to meet the UL 9540 requirements for energy storage systems, which should make fire-safety review and permitting simpler than for large lithium-ion banks. Formal certification and site permitting still have to be completed.

What happens in an earthquake or a flood?

Protection is designed per site. In seismic regions the installation is modeled for the expected earthquake loads, with ground isolation and extra damping where needed. Inside, the backup bearings take the load if the rotor is pushed off center.

Can it keep running if the grid goes down?

Accepted Answer

Yes, that is part of the design. The grid-forming electronics let it island, running on its own stored energy to support local power without a separate generator. The details depend on how each site is set up.

What maintenance does it need?

The rotor, housing and bearings are designed to last the life of the unit. The vacuum pump, power electronics and cooling are serviced parts with scheduled replacements. Service intervals, costs and warranty terms will be set with the first commercial customers.

Are there hazardous materials?

Nothing hazardous is needed to store the energy: no electrolyte and no thermal-runaway chemistry. Like any machine, it uses some conventional industrial fluids for cooling and maintenance. The unit is built to be repaired rather than replaced, and end-of-life recycling plans are still being developed.

What happens if power to the magnetic bearings fails suddenly?

The permanent magnets that carry the rotor's weight need no power. If the active magnetic bearings fault, an emergency safety bearing catches the rotor, with a separate touchdown bearing behind it. The control system can then bring the rotor down safely, and if the grid is disconnected, the stored energy can be dumped through an electric brake resistor.
